Establishing A School of Science and Technology


Minister for Education, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, announces the establishment of the School of Science and Technology (SST), Singapore, as the nation’s fourth Specialised Independent School.

Committee Formed


The steering committee and sub-committees are formed to design a holistic curriculum with a focus toward the Sciences and Technology. The Ministry of Education and Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) supports SST in an overseas learning journey, focus group discussions with prospective students and parents, as well as recruitment of the school’s first batch of pioneer staff.

Pioneer Staff


SST’s pioneer staff start work in an office housed at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Behind the doors of this office, countless discussions and meetings are held to plan for the school’s curriculum, publicity and outreach activities, as well as the refurbishment of our holding campus.

The First BOD Meeting and MOU Signing Between NTU, NP and SST


The SST Board of Directors (BOD), chaired by Prof Su Guaning, President, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), convenes the first SST Board of Directors’ meeting. The inaugural meeting is followed by the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between NTU, NP and SST, Singapore.

Direction School Admission (DSA)


SST’s first round of Parent’s Seminars at Ngee Ann Polytechnic for parents of Primary 6 students across all primary schools in Singapore. Commencement of the first Direct School Admission.

SST’s Inaugural Open House


SST holds its inaugural Open House at the holding site near Clementi Avenue 6 and Dr Ng Eng Hen, Ministry for Education, graces the occasion as Guest of Honour.

First A Day@SST


SST’s first A Day @ SST, where potential students experienced “learning in a whole new way” with classroom activities.

School Uniforms

Prior to joining SST, students from the Pioneer Cohort are given the opportunity to vote for their preferred school uniform. The final designs are selected based on the votes and the school’s requirements

The SST S&W attire comes in 5 versions to represent the House colours. They are Black, Yellow, Blue, Red and Green. These colours are in reference to the five colours of the Olympic Rings. Students are assigned their specific Houses when they enter SST in Secondary One and remain in the House throughout their journey in SST.

The First Cohort of Students


The pioneer cohort of SST students begins school. The exciting array of activities on the first day of school includes the Bridge Building activity, the Amazing Race and the overnight camp. The key cornerstone of the Orientation Camp is the annual Badge Ceremony, where students receive the collar pins to reaffirm their status as SST students.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony


SST holds its Groundbreaking Ceremony for its new school campus with Ms Grace Fu, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Education as the Guest of Honour. On the same occasion, SST receives a donation of S$8.1 million from Ngee Ann Kongsi.

The MOU Signing Between SST and IBN


SST signs a MOU with the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN), to broaden and deepen SST students’ learning in the field of scientific research as well as concepts of technopreneurship.

First Overseas Learning Trip for Students


Secondary 1 students visit Beijing & Guangzhou, China under the schools’ Global Citizenship Programme (GCP).

School Blazer Introduced


During formal school events and external competitions, SST students will wear the school blazer, together with a white long sleeve shirt, striped tie and black dress shoes.

The First Day of School


Students celebrate the first day of school in Year 2011 by showing appreciation towards the construction workers of SST’s new campus with a special presentation, a robotics showcase and a buffet lunch.

MOU Signing with Overseas Education Partners – RDFZ Xishan School


SST signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Renda Fuzhong (RDFZ) Xishan School (人大附中) from China – for the purpose of working in close partnership with each other and promoting exchanges in the field of education and learning.

First Celebrations@SST


The inaugural speech day cum prize-giving, Celebrations@SST, is held to celebrate students’ academic and holistic achievements in school.

3 JANUARY 2012
Move to New Campus


SST marks its move to the new campus by engaging in a community food donation drive. The initiative is an extension of the school’s service learning programme to instill active citizenship amongst the students. On the same day, the SST school flag is also unveiled for the first time to the school community as well as the media.

Strategic Alliance of Global Educators (SAGE)


SST is initiated as one of the founding members of the Strategic Alliance of Global Educators (SAGE), a professional network that facilitates extensive sharing of pedagogical ideas, resources and best practices in 21st century learning.

School Jacket


The school jacket is introduced to keep the students comfortable during local and overseas excursions and also serves as a means of identification.

Final Version of School Song


The school song emerges with the involvement of several parties and multiple stages in conceptualisation and development. Made of 2 stanzas, the chorus and a bridge, it is put together based on word clouds generated from student contributions. The final version of the song is recorded; sung by SST’s very own Show Choir.

The Official Opening of SST


Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam attends the ceremony together with a few other distinguished guests such as Dr. Su Guaning, SST’s Chairman and President Emeritus at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Highlights include a lion dance, a P.E.T water rocket salute and a flash mob by the students and an LED light dance performance by the SST Show Choir.

First Student Congress – EXPose


Working around the themes of “Discover”, “Dream”, “Design” and “Deliver”, students share their opinions of what makes SST tick (Discover) and what they envision SST to be like in the future (Dream). Selected students also participated in the brainstorming and design of strategies to bring about positive change.

SST Hackathon


SST organises its inaugural Hackathon with the theme “Enhancing the Community Spirit – Through Web Applications”. Participants hail from 38 teams from 21 schools. The overnight coding event is the first of its kind that reaches out to primary and secondary school students nationwide.

Graduation Night


At the end of four memorable years in SST, graduands from the pioneer cohort bid farewell to their classmates, friends and both academic and non-academic members of SST community, as they embark on the next phase of their lives.

Release of O-Levels results (Pioneer Cohort)


The pioneer cohort receive their GCE O-Level results. The students performed very well. 100% of the students are able to gain entry to a polytechnic, 98% of the students can advance to a Junior College or Polytechnic and 56.5% of the students obtain 5 or more distinctions.

Visit by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Mrs Lee


PM Lee and Mrs Lee are given a warm welcome during their visit with SST. Highlights include a tour to the Biotechnology lab, a lesson observation of a class using TI-Nspire to solve a Mathematical problem and also a visit to the the Robotics @APEX room, where PM Lee and Mrs Lee are given a chance to navigate the robots in order to complete a task.

3-5 JUNE 2014


SST organises its inaugural Make-A-Thon with the theme “Enhancing the Life of Singapore’s Pioneer”. A total of 120 students from 6 primary schools and 10 secondary schools participated in the overnight coding event

Lab School @ SST


SST organises its inaugural Lab School. Lab School @ SST brings partners together on a common platform to share teaching and learning practices in applied learning approaches, create ideation space in the use of technology to support applied learning and to create opportunities for future collaboration.

Strategic Review Exercise


The school embarks on a Strategic Review Exercise where Board members, parents, staff and students were consulted. The vision and mission were refreshed to guide future initiatives.

School Green Awards


SST attains the Lotus Award for the School Green Awards organised by Singapore Environment Council (SEC).  The bronze award for the 3R Awards (based on the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) also recognises our efforts in practising the 3Rs, contributing to better waste management and recycling.

Change of Leadership


Founding Principal, Mr Chua Chor Huat was succeeded by Mr Hoe Wee Meng. Parents, students and staff of SST thanks Mr Chua for his pioneering work in establishing the school via various tributes.

SST Tech Summit


SST organises its inaugural SST Tech Summit 2015, a one-day event that focuses on harnessing Google-related apps or platforms for education to promote self-directed learning and collaborative learning among students. It provides a platform for researchers and practitioners to meet and share their experiences in deploying Google Apps for Education.

Apple Distinguished School award


SST has been named an Apple Distinguished School in 2017, for the third year running. This award recognises SST as an exemplary learning environment for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence.

SST-3M Innovation Challenge


SST collaborates with 3M on the inaugural SST-3M Innovation Challenge in alignment with the World Creativity and Innovation Week (WCIW). Based on the themes of aging population, education and safety, Secondary One students develope the prototypes for their creations using special Innovator’s Toolkits from 3M. Students mentored by selected 3M staff during the project period and the top five prototypes presents to judges at a fair which showcased all the projects.

Visit by Minister Heng Swee Keat


SST hosts Education Minister, Mr Heng Swee Keat, during his visit to the school. He was treated to a showcase of student projects which included a haze sensor and smart car park.

Change of School Leadership


Mrs Linda Chan takes over the reins as Principal of SST. Mr Hoe Wee Meng will assume a new role in the Prime Minister’s Office.

SUTD – SST Big – D Camp


50 students from SST participates in a design and prototyping workshop at  the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).  Known as the SUTD-SST Big-D Camp, this inaugural programme will kickstart a series of collaborations between SST and SUTD 101.

ISSN Membership


SST officially joins the International Science Schools Network (ISSN) as a Guest Member.

SunburST Makers’ InnoFest


Singapore Technologies Endowment Programme (STEP) supported SST in the SunburST Makers’ InnoFest which aims to build capacity and seed interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) amongst young innovators through a series of maker-centric workshops.

SST and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) sign MOU in a collaboration to extend joint initiatives to groom young leaders with the passion and aptitude for STEM and design.

Our alumni from the Class of 2013 continue to do SST proud with their various achievements; receiving scholarships, awards and taking leadership positions in their respective schools. One of our outstanding alumni, Ho Yan Jin,  was the first female to receive the Singapore Armed Forces Engineering Scholarship, aimed at attracting top scientists and engineers.
