The SST Fencing Team was set up in February 2011, with the pioneer batch comprising of 26 energetic and committed Secondary 1 and 2 students. To date, the club has more than 60 students from across Secondary 1 to 4 levels. The art of fencing is a common interest amongst the fencers and is one of the main reasons why they have selected this fast-paced and heart-throbbing sport as their choice CCA.
Fencing is a multi-faceted discipline that gives a fencer a complete body and mind workout as special aspect is placed upon the technicalities of it. It also enhances the mind to focus and instill self-control in every fencer.
Modern fencing is a combat sport that is recognised as a key event in the International Olympic Games, where fencers use bladed weapons such as the foil, sabre or épée to engage each other in a skillful attack or defence during a fencing bout. The objective is to score points through touching a legal location on the opponent. The points scored are automatically recorded by an electronic scoring apparatus and the fencers will have to score a stipulated number of points (typically 15 points) before they win a bout.
At present, the SST Fencing CCA engages Absolute Fencing as the official trainers and consultants for the students. Training sessions are held on a bi-weekly basis, in the afternoons of Mondays and Fridays.
The strong passion and interest that the team has for this unique CCA is proven by their proficiency and competency in this sport. Since their inauguration, they have participated in various competitions and clinched several awards:
