Amazing Science X-Challenge

On 14 September 2011, we sent five teams to participate in the annual Amazing Science X-Challenge (ASXC) organised by DSO National Laboratories (DSO), National University of Singapore (NUS) and Science Centre Singapore (SCS).

A total of 147 teams participated this year and our students performed incredibly well and clinched two Special Mention Prizes, which include medals and cash prizes worth $150 for each team.  We would like to congratulate the following students for their hard work:

Group 3

  • Ng Kok Yin  S208
  • Cassandra Ong Shieh Ling  S203
  • Fong Siew Min Serene  S204

Group 4

  • Gan Wei Qin  S207
  • Sherwin Seah Yew Hsing  S107
  • Farrell Nah Jun Hao  S107

The ASXC challenges young minds to design and build a stand-alone exhibit that best explains a physical science phenomenon. Group 3 designed the winning exhibit entitled “Acoustic Levitation @ Low Frequencies” and Group 4 designed “The Flow of Wind in Different-Shaped Wind Tunnels.”

Their designs were novel, creative and impressive all at the same time and we would like to thank Ms Karen Teo for rendering her support and guidance to the students throughout this competition.

We certainly look forward to seeing more interesting exhibits next year and once again, congratulations to all!

N.E.mation 2011

In September, three teams from SST participated in the N.E.mation competition organised by Nexus for youths to express their thoughts on Total Defence. The digital animation competition is into its sixth season this year and all three teams made it to the Top 100 list for the qualifying round.

The training and competition took place from 3 to 10 September at Nanyang Polytechnic and our students displayed great enthusiasm in learning different styles and techniques of animation.

Here are the results of the qualifying round:

Top 40

  • Michelle Lim
  • Clarabelle Ang

Top 20

The students experienced very tough competition during those few days as they were up against 200 teams from other Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges.

Amongst the three teams, only Dreamation will be proceeding to produce an animation clip for nationwide broadcasting. They will be undergoing intensive production from 21 November to 9 December 2011.

The top 10 clips that will be produced at the end of this year will be revealed to the public for voting in January 2012. The grand prize of this competition includes a fully sponsored trip to USA to visit DreamWorks Animation SKG and winners will get a chance to see how films like Kung Fu Panda, Shrek and Shark Tales were made.

Special thanks to Ms Seah Yen Sin for leading the students in this competition and let us continue to lend our support to Dreamation as they work towards creating the best animation clip for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit DreamWorks!

Please click here to be directed to the official N.E.mation Facebook page and we look forward to your support during the voting period in January 2012!

Congratulations to all!
