During the June holidays, 34 students took part in the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad Competition under the Junior section. Our students won a total of 1 Silver, 3 Bronze and 3 Honourable Mention awards.
4 teams have participated in this year Amazing Science X-Challenge 2010 which requires them to create a stand-alone, self-explanatory exhibit that demonstrates a particular scientific concept unique to the physical sciences. One of our teams has emerged as the winners for the Special Mention Prizes of $150 and a medal.

Singapore VEX Robotics Championship 2010 Our Robotics Club participated in the Singapore VEX Robotics Championship 2010 (3 - 4 June 2010).
The club has obtained Silver for 2 out of 3 categories of the competition, for "Team Alliance" and "Best Programming Skills". The team was also awarded the "Judges Award" trophy for Best Newcomer.

Lim Kian Chuan Edwin
Edwin Li graduated from Loughborough University (UK) with a first class honors degree in Manufacturing Engineering and Management. Before joining the teaching profession, he had worked as a quality engineer in the semi-conductor industry.
Prior to joining SST, Edwin had taught in Fuhua Secondary School for seven years, concentrating on teaching subjects such as Design and Technology and Mathematics. He is passionate about Product Design and has inspired his students to participate in Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors competition.
Edwin believes in applied learning as being influenced by his experiences during his studies in Loughborough. As a teacher in SST, Edwin hopes that his beliefs and passion will be able to spark and inspire his pupils to be creative and develop a strong character.

Alice Lim
Alice graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma Education from National University of Singapore and National Institute for Education in 2002 and 2003 respectively and received her MA from University of New South Wales in 2007.
Prior to joining SST, Alice taught English Language and Humanities at Bukit Panjang Government High School. There she was also active in her Co-Curricular Activity, Infocomm Club, where she guided her students on various projects. Alice has a keen interest in discovering more about language acquisition and the pedagogical effects on learning. She is also keen to share her passion for Literature and short films with her students.

Geraint Wong
For more than 11 years before joining SST, Geraint taught English Language and Mathematics at CHIJ St Nicholas Girls' School, and built up a diverse portfolio there. As a Senior Teacher he was involved in curriculum design, and as Head of Pupil Development he oversaw student discipline and leadership development. He was also involved in corporate communications, publicity, and designing publications. In 2004 he formed the school's student publications team and established a partnership with The Straits Times Media Club in the training of student journalists.
Geraint holds a first-class honours degree and master's degree in Linguistics. Effectively bilingual, he was part of the team at St Nicholas teaching English-Chinese translation as an enrichment subject. Indeed Geraint has always been fascinated by languages, and is passionate about inspiring his students to discover the wonders of English and to improve their proficiency in the language.

Jarrod Ignitius Nooh
Jarrod is a Public Service Commission scholar who received his Bachelor of Arts (with Merit) from the National University of Singapore in 1995. He went on to obtain his Postgraduate Diploma in Education (with Credit) from the Nanyang Technological University the following year.
His wealth of experience is in the field of English, English Literature, General Paper and Film Studies, having touched the lives of many students at North View Secondary and Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School.
Jarrod’s last appointment was Head of Department of English, Literature and the Humanities at Hwa Chong International School where he developed and taught the curriculum for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education and the International Baccalaureate Programme.
He firmly believes in the education of the whole child and holds pupil development close to his heart, having conducted and attended courses in various Learning Circles, MOE Excel Fest and Teachers’ Network. Armed with a repertoire of teaching strategies, Jarrod aims to promote applied learning with the head, hand and heart. Although an English teacher, Jarrod believes that “good science is about good observation”, and that it’s not about the technology, it’s about the learning.

Salena Nair
Salena graduated with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Theatre Studies from the National University of Singapore in 1998. As teaching had always been a calling, she pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Education at National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in 1999. While teaching English and Literature at East Spring Secondary School, she completed her Postgraduate diploma in Drama and Drama Education in 2005. Salena subsequently obtained her Masters in Education (research based) with distinctions from Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia in 2007.
Salena has shared her learning and teaching experiences at various school and cluster level such as the launch of the East Zone Centre of Excellence for English Language at Tanjong Katong Girls' School in 2008. Supervised under renowned lecturers in the field of drama education in Australia, she is keen to use the pedagogies of process drama and integrate Information Communication Technology into her teaching practices at SST so as to enhance students' learning experiences and develop both their affective and cognitive domains. She also hopes her reflective practice will inculcate the love of the English Language in her students so as to provide them with a well-rounded and holistic education.

Amy Choo
Amy graduated from the National Taiwan Normal University in 2002 with a Bachelor's degree in Arts
(Chinese Language and Literature) and Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Amy has taught in Regent Secondary School and Innova Junior College between 2002 to 2007. During her teaching stint, Amy had led two student immersion groups to Taiwan and volunteered in the Overseas Community Service Programme to Yunnan where she taught English to students in the Duomei village. Prior to joining SST, Amy was in MOE Corporate Communications Division where she was able to hone her communication and planning skills via major projects like the Committee of Supply (COS) debate and the announcement of the establishment of the Singapore Centre for Chinese Language.

Jamie Tan
Jamie started her teaching career in 1996 in CHIJ (Katong). In 1999, she went to further her studies at the Nanjing University, graduating in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Chinese Language and Literature. She joined Ngee Ann Secondary School as a Chinese Language teacher, rising to be a Subject Head. While she was still teaching, she co
mpleted her Masters in Education (Chinese Specialisation) at the Nanyang Technological University. Apart from her teaching responsibilities, she also undertook and led a variety of projects in the Student Development Management Committee. She participated in the Teachers' Exchange Programme in Dalian (2004) and Shandong (2006), and had the opportunity to experience a homestay in Mihama, Japan (2008) with a group of student leaders.

Yeo Sok Hui
Sok Hui graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor's degree in Arts,majoring in Chinese Language and Chinese Studies in 2001. She obtained her Postgraduate Diploma in E
ducation with Credit from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University the following year. In the 7 years of her teaching career, she had the opportunity to present her teaching strategies at MOE Excel Fest and Teachers Network.
While in Kent Ridge Secondary School, Sok Hui attended a cultural immersion course in Northeast Normal University, China. She was also involved in the Singapore-Shanghai Immersion Home-Stay Programme in 2007 and 2008 in order to inculcate in her students a global outlook. She believes in the holistic development of a student and aims to instill both the cultural and academic aspect of the Chinese Language in every student.

Azizah Bte Ahmad
Azizah has 10 years of teaching experience. After she graduated from the National University of
Singapore with a Bachelor's degree in Arts, majoring in Malay Studies and Sociology in 1997, she worked as a relief and contract teacher. She pursued her passion in teaching and obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Education with Credit from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University the following year. Prior to joining SST, Azizah was a Subject Head Malay Language in Hong Kah Secondary School. She led a group of Malay teachers at the school and cluster level. She coordinated programmes for the Malay students where she integrated Project Work and Community Involvement Programme in the curriculum as she believes in developing students holistically. Besides this, she was able to work closely with students from all levels through her work as the Assistant Discipline Master, Assistant Year Head 4 and CIP Coordinator. Her passion in teaching extended to students of other schools where she conducted various GCE 'O' Preparatory Workshop for Malay Students at the cluster level. She also presented in the Malay Language Seminar organised by MOE. She was awarded the Caring Teacher Award (School Level) in 2009 and the Caring Teacher Award from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in 2010.

Edmund Ng
Edmund graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering majoring in Mechanical & Production Engineering in 2002. During his university days, Edmund was an active volunteer with the Singapore Boys' Home. The experience he gained increased his belief that every child will strive to do his best given the proper learning environment and guidance.
Upon obtaining his Postgraduate Diploma in Education from National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in 2003, Edmund taught Mathematics and spearheaded Overseas Service Learning at Nan Hua High School. His other interests include outdoor adventure and travelling, as Edmund believes that the best way to learn is to experience the process.

Jason Charles Ingham
Jason read for his undergradute degree in Computer Science at the National University of Singapore. Graduating in 1996, he went onto read for his Postgraduate Diploma in Education in 1997 and completed his Masters of Education in 2000 at the National Institute of Education. He has always been interested in using technology to provide students with a more realistic learning experience and have written several papers on how technology can be used to facilitate the learning of Mathematics in a multi-representational environment.
He believes that teaching and learning should include three main forms of interaction. These are mainly Teacher-Student, Student-Student (collaborative) and Student-Learning Material (applied learning). All of these interactions can come together to create a very enriching learning environment within the classroom. Creating this “Community of Learners” has long been an area of research interest for Jason.
In his spare time, Jason loves to read, take photographs and is an avid tennis player. He is also a firm believer in the benefits of community service, having volunteered his services for Habitat for Humanity in Cambodia and Kenya.

Nur Johari Bin Salleh
Johari graduated as an engineer but teaching has always been a calling. He takes a personal interest in moulding students into good and responsible young adults. Many students attribute him for helping them develop a sense of purpose in life. In 2006 he was conferred the 'President Award for Teachers' and Stanford University, US, 'Inspiring Teacher 'award for his contributions to the teaching fraternity. He has contributed actively to the professional growth of teachers through Teachers Network and he was awarded the 'Friend of Teachers Network Award in 2001'. His zest for learning is apparent as he continually seeks new approaches to make his lessons more effective. He has presented numerous papers at conferences and organised learning journeys for students. Outside the school community, Johari is also active in SINDA and MENDAKI, conducting motivational workshops and seminars that have benefitted many students.

Chan Kin Chuah
Kin Chuah received his Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical Engineering from National University of Singapore in 1999. After a short stint as a process engineer in the semiconductor industry, he went on to o
btain his Postgraduate Diploma (Secondary) in Education from National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in 2002.
Prior to joining SST, Kin Chuah taught Physics in Jurongville SecondarySchool for 7 years. He believes in designing and delivering engaging lessons such that students will be inspired to learn pro-actively. In 2007, KinChuah went on a 5-week overseas science attachment to University of Washington, Seattle, and subsequently worked with the science unit in the Curriculum Planning and Development Division, Ministry of Education, to adapt materials for our local context.

Charles Low
Charles graduated from National University of Singapore with a Degree in Biology (Merit) in 2003 and subsequently earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Biology) with credit from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in 2004.
As a Biology teacher for almost 6 years, he enjoys interacting with and nurturing his students to appreciate biology and aims to use Applied Learning as a catalyst to make the learning of Science meaningful for his students in their daily lives. A creative and enthusiastic teacher, Charles strongly believes in engaging and stretching the potential of every child in the classroom.
Charles has also presented papers in the international arena. In the 2006 International Science Education Conference, he shared with educators how to use blogs to enhance the independent learning of Biology. He was awarded the Most Outstanding Staff Contribution Award (Individual) in 2009.
Art, Design, Media & Technology
Seah Yen Sin
Yen Sin is a mechanical engineer by training and holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical & Production Engineering, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Merit). While teaching Design and Technology (D&T) for 6 years in Tanjong Katong Secondary School, she guided and inspired her students creatively in design to win the D&T Awards and Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors Award. She has also presented during the D&T conference and shared with teachers the teaching practices in her school.
Yen Sin is active in sports and was an NCC Sea Officer for 6 years. She was also the teacher in charge of the AV Media Club and helped mentor students during video competitions such as the School Digital Media Awards. Over the years, she has also equipped herself with photography and videography skills which she hopes to put to good use in SST.

Aurelius Yeo
Aurelius graduated from National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Arts (Merit), specialising in Geography and Southeast Asian Studies in 2001. Upon graduation, his passion for ICT spurred him to take a Diploma in Information Technology (Credit) from NCC Education, UK in 2002. In 2009, He received his Masters Degree in Arts specialising in Social Studies.
Prior to joining the education service, he worked as a web developer for a regional office. He joined the education service in 2002 and obtained his Postgraduate Diploma in Education in 2003. He was appointed a Subject Head (Humanities) in Nan Hua High School in 2007.
As a firm believer of using ICT in education, Aurelius developed Video Podcast as a teaching tool in Nan Hua High School and has conducted professional development sessions for teachers in school and at Teachers' Network.
Geography
James Koh
James Koh graduated from the University of Toronto, Canada, with a
Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Physical Geography and Urban
Planning in 1997. He went on to work as an Executive Transport
Planner/Modeller in Land Transport Authority. His industrial experiences include planning and project managing in road & rail planning and engineering feasibility studies such as the Concept Plan Review 2003, Western Region Transport Study, Circle Line, Boon Lay Extension Line and other future lines.
He joined the education service and obtained his Postgraduate Diploma in
Education from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in 2003. In the 7 years of his teaching career, he had the opportunity to present teaching strategies involving the use of ICT at Teachers' Network.
Prior to joining SST, James has taught Upper Secondary Geography in
Nan Hua High School and Chua Chu Kang Secondary School for 7 years. He believes in applied learning and armed with his rich work experiences, seeks to help students see the relevance in what they learn so as to prepare them to meet the tomorrow's challenges.
Sports and Wellness
Aidil Bin Idris
Aidil graduated with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Psychology in 1997. Before teaching, Aidil worked in Yayasan MENDAKI and the National Cancer Centre, Singapore. The experience that he gained from the remediation-focused work increased his belief in the potential that early positive influence plays an important role in the development of a child.
Aidil obtained his Postgraduate Diploma in Physical Education with Distinction from the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, and was awarded the Rotary Club Gold Medal for outstanding academic results and service in 2004. He then went on to pursue a Masters in Science (Exercise and Sports Science) with Nanyang Technological University. His interest in the integration of Information Communication and Technology (ICT) in physical education led him to SST. Prior to that, Aidil taught Physical Education and Project Work at Meridian Junior College.

Dennis Lam
Dennis graduated from NIE in 2002 with BSc 2nd Upper Hon and Dip in Phys Ed. He taught Project Work and Physical Education at Saint Andrew’s Junior College for 5 years.
In his previous school, Dennis was the teacher-in-charge of the Outdoor Activities Club, where he organized more than 10 overseas expeditions and camps. He also led a team of students to Udon Thani, Thailand for a 2-week Overseas Community Project. He was appointed Acting Subject Head for Project Work. In this role, he mentored Project Work supervising tutors in assessing and moderating Project Work as an ‘A’ level subject. Dennis’ portfolio stretches beyond teaching, having 3 years of experience as a personal banker.
As a S&W teacher in SST, Dennis seeks to inculcate in students a commitment to lead a healthy, dynamic life, as well as help them develop the strengths of both mind and body.
