During the June holidays, 34 students took part in the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad Competition under the Junior section. Our students won a total of 1 Silver, 3 Bronze and 3 Honourable Mention awards.
4 teams have participated in this year Amazing Science X-Challenge 2010 which requires them to create a stand-alone, self-explanatory exhibit that demonstrates a particular scientific concept unique to the physical sciences. One of our teams has emerged as the winners for the Special Mention Prizes of $150 and a medal.

Singapore VEX Robotics Championship 2010 Our Robotics Club participated in the Singapore VEX Robotics Championship 2010 (3 - 4 June 2010).
The club has obtained Silver for 2 out of 3 categories of the competition, for "Team Alliance" and "Best Programming Skills". The team was also awarded the "Judges Award" trophy for Best Newcomer.
Chor Huat taught Mathematics at Raffles Junior College and was Vice-Principal at Yishun Junior College, before his last appointment as Principal of Ngee Ann Secondary.

Principal
Mr Chua Chor Huat
Chor Huat taught Mathematics at Raffles Junior College and was Vice-Principal at Yishun Junior College, before his last appointment as Principal of Ngee Ann Secondary. He has also held key appointments during his stints with the head office of the education ministry, namely the Planning and Schools Divisions respectively.
In 1992, Chor Huat was awarded with first class honours in Mathematics from the National University of Singapore. The following year, he went on to obtain his Postgraduate Diploma in Education with Credit from the Nanyang Technological University. Chor Huat was an MOE undergraduate scholar, and was subsequently awarded an MOE postgraduate scholarship to do his Masters in Curriculum and Instruction at the Lynch School of Education, Boston College, Massachusetts.
Chor Huat is also actively involved with the larger community and is a member of the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC).

Hong Joon is a mechanical engineer by training and holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical & Production Engineering, as well as a Master of Science in Precision Engineering. Prior to his appointment as the Vice Principal of SST, Hong Joon was a senior lecturer who also concurrently held the appointment of Manager of the Automation & Integrated Systems Centre at Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Mechanical Engineering Division. As a senior lecturer, Hong Joon has taught and led a diverse range of modules including Creativity & Applied Thinking Skills, History & Principles of Design, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems and Introduction to Mechatronics. In his 15 years of lecturing experience at the Polytechnic he has received several distinguished academic awards for teaching and module development.

Mrs Chew Wai Lee
An English and Physical Education teacher by training, Wai Lee worked in Raffles Girls' School (Secondary) for 26 years. She holds a BA with a postgraduate Diploma in Education as well as a MA in Applied Linguistics. Her previous appointments as Senior Teacher, English and Director, Pupil Development has provided her with not just classroom experience but opportunities for conducting teacher workshops and writing and presenting papers at conferences such as the RELC as well as ASCD conferences. Besides curriculum development, Wai Lee has deep interest in the study of social emotional learning and leadership development.

Mr Lam Hin Chew
Hin Chew has been in the education service since 1990, and his teaching experiences span across both primary and secondary schools (Poi Ching School and Tampines Secondary School). During his stints with the MOE head office, he has been involved in curriculum development work with the Physical Education Unit.
Yearning to further develop and challenge himself beyond school settings, Hin Chew resigned from the teaching service and translated his interest in outdoor education into a business venture. The experience had enhanced both his personal and professional growth and development. It has also deeply enriched his perspectives and outlook on life. Between 1997 and 1999, Hin Chew also worked as an outdoor education facilitator in the private sector.
Hin Chew aims to make education experiential, fun and memorable. His current focus in education is to develop future SST students into healthy, caring and responsible citizens.
HOD, Information and Communication
Ms Loh Kwai Yin
In her 15 years in the education service, Kwai Yin has taught Mathematics, Computer Applications and Elements of Office Administration. She was responsible for setting up the Commerce department in the school, before heading the ICT and Mathematics departments in Ngee Ann Secondary. Subsequently, she joined the Educational Technology Division (ETD), MOE in 2006.
During her stint with the ETD, she was involved in the development of the Baseline ICT Standards, an initiative that has been rolled out to all schools since 2007. As accolades to her work in the ETD, Kwai Yin received the prestigious MOE Service Excellence Award (MSEA) in 2006 as well as the Innergy Award (Commendation) in 2007. She presented her work on ICT-related practices in schools and classrooms, at a seminar for Heads of Department in 2003; and also at the International Conference on Teaching and Learning with Technology in 2008.
Apart from her engagement in Singapore schools, Kwai Yin served as a Singapore Volunteers Overseas in Bhutan under the "IT in Education" project in 2005. More recently, she is a member of the Specialist Team for the project, "Vocational Training Project" in India.

Ms Ooi Ching Ya
Ching Ya graduated as Valedictorian in Chinese Language and Literature at the Peking University in 2002. She had the honor of setting up the Singapore Students' Association (Beijing) with the support of Contact Singapore in 2001. Ching Ya has strong interests in literary works and produced an essay compilation, comprising works by overseas Singaporean scholars, titled "Shu Tu" in 2002. Prior to joining SST, Ching Ya taught Chinese Language at Fuhua Primary School and Westwood Secondary School for three years respectively, and served as a Curriculum Planning Officer in the Curriculum Planning and Development Division (CPDD) of the MOE, where she played an active role in the Primary Chinese Language Curriculum Review and Implementation. She was awarded the prestigious MOE Service Excellence Award (MSEA) in 2007 and subsequently awarded the National Public Service Star Service Award (PSSSA) in 2009.

Mr Wong Tien Chieh, Glenn
Glenn oversees the overall Science curriculum and programmes in SST. He has received training in the fields of chemistry, as well as instructional design and technology, focusing on the educational technology aspect of curriculum pedagogy. As a Chemistry teacher for almost 6 years, he believes in developing students through life skills, and making connections with their environments through the application of scientific knowledge and ICT tools. He also has experiences in managing projects which aim at developing students' skills in leadership and research work through inquiry and challenge-based learning.

Mr Richard Koh Pee Chou
Richard received his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the National Institute of Education in 2002, and his Master degree in Education specializing in English Language from Nanyang Technological University in 2009. Prior to joining the SST, Richard taught English Language and Mathematics in Ngee Ann Secondary School where he received the Caring Teacher Award (School Level) in 2004. He then went on to serve as an Educational Technology Officer in the education ministry where he was involved in the development of the Baseline ICT Standards. He has also presented at the RELC seminar, Redesigning Pedagogy Conference and MOE Excel Fest and was awarded the prestigious MOE Service Excellence Award (MSEA) in 2007. Richard strongly believes that even though he is a digital immigrant and his two sons are not, he speaks the same language as them. He loves to read and hopes this useful skill will not be lost in his children and students in the advent of technology.

Mrs Iong Eunice
Eunice graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor's degree in Science with Merit, specializing in Biochemistry and Microbiology. She went on to obtain her Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Secondary) with Credit from the Nanyang Technological University. Eunice had the honor to serve as the secretary of the North Zone Elementz Students Science Research Competition in 2004. Eunice mentored and guided many teams in the Elementz Students Science Research Competitions. The teams won awards like Most Interesting Project Award and Best Oral Presentation Award.
Eunice was appointed internally as the Level Head of Character Education, Community Involvement Programme and National Education in Gan Eng Seng School in 2008. She assisted the department to coordinate and integrate all three components to form a holistic character development programme for the school, delineated distinctly by the teaching of values to students through engaging their minds, hearts and hands.
Eunice worked as a medical technician in Toa Payoh Hospital in 1995 and as a research assistant in Changi General Hospital in 1997. She assisted the hospital to conduct research on the drug sensitivity of bacterium - Helicobacter pylori.
Eunice had been a Biology teacher in Seng Kang Secondary School for 6 years and Gan Eng Seng School for 3 years. She also taught Computer Applications for 9 years.

Mr Mohamed Irfan Bin Darian
Irfan is a mid-career professional who answered the call to teaching, after working as a product design engineer and a decision support analyst for 5 years. Armed with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering and Systems Engineering respectively, Irfan can count photography, product sketching, computer games, and experimenting with new software tools, especially Macintosh-based ones, as part of his repertoire of hobbies.
He is interested in looking at research areas that are related to the cognitive development of students' design capacities, specifically their Design Quotient (DQ). Having been awarded the Most Innovative Teacher Award for 2 consecutive years in Unity Secondary School, Irfan is a passionate believer and experimenter in innovative and creative teaching and learning methods.

Ms Jennifer Tay Lin Chin
Jennifer started her teaching career as a History teacher in Raffles Girls' Secondary School. She has shared and presented her pedagogical experiences at various international conferences. They include the Raffles International Conference for Education (R.I.C.E), and the Asia-Pacific Conference for Gifted Education (APCG). For the Academic Year 2007/8, the research project group under Jennifer's tutelage emerged as one of the top three presenters at the annual Humanities and Social Sciences Research Programme (HSSRP) Symposium, organized by the Gifted Education Branch, MOE.
In 2000, Jennifer was awarded the Ministry of Education's Teaching Award to pursue her undergraduate studies. She has an Honours degree in Arts, and is currently pursuing her Master degree in Arts with the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University.
