Students had the opportunity to vote for topics that they were most interested in exploring and were split into different groups to work on short presentations relating to a diverse range of technology-related topics. They include:

• How Mobile Devices Liberate Education

During their short but intense presentations, they exhibited eloquent understanding of the different aspects of technology. The session was wrapped up by Mr Danien Chee of the Board of Directors and President of Cabal Entertainment Software, who shared valuable insight about realising one’s potential and answered questions from our budding inventors.

They prepared well for this competition and we would like to congratulate them for putting in a great amount of time and effort for this purpose. As we continue to anticipate more of their action in the year ahead, we would also like to thank the coach, teachers, parents and fellow peers for rendering their support to the team. Their encouragement and motivation certainly played a huge role in the team’s excellent performance at the competition.

Our students were competing under the RoboCup Junior Dance League, which seeks to create a learning environment for today, fostering understanding among humans and technology for tomorrow.

For the first part of this event, our students were involved in an individual team performance, where they performed a Japanese-inspired dance together with the robots that they built. Prior to this, they were involved in the programming and building of the robot and we are certainly very impressed with the robots that they designed!

As they moved onto the second category, our students collaborated with students from RGS and TMS to produce a combined dance performance. It was indeed a fun and engaging experience for all as they walked away with glee and an indelible memory. We are proud of our students and certainly look forward to more of such performances in the months ahead!

On 31 March 2012, four of our students (Kimberly Ong S309, Dionne Choo S309, See To Yu Xiang S307, Lee YuChong S308) participated in the Grand Finals of the NUS Geography Challenge 2012, an event which was highly competitive and challenging at the same time. Nonetheless, they walked away with four different awards in the following categories:

• 2nd Place for Geography Ad Category (Video)

• Most Popular Video

• Geo-trial Stations’ Best (Berkeley Creek)

• Geo-trial Stations’ Best (Jurong East)

Their achievements are a testimony and affirmation of their learning experiences in SST, as they brought forth the essence of applied learning by infusing technology into their tasks — producing videos, solving problems during the geo trial, as well as utilising their cognitive skills for the pen and paper tests.

We would like to congratulate all who participated and as you continue to soar at future competitions, we hope that each journey will be a memorable learning experience for all!

On 3 and 4 March 2012, our SST Floorball Team participated in a 3-on-3 Floorball FACEOFF event, which was jointly organised by U Sports and the Singapore Floorball Association.

The event took place at the Pasir Ris Sports and Recreation Centre, which comprised two new categories; the mixed novice and mixed corporate, in a bid to create more awareness for the event.

There was also a range of fringe activities which catered to participants and spectators alike; where they were required to shoot through specific holes at a goalpost and balance the floorball on the floorball stick for as long as possible.

The element of fun made the event much more memorable and through this, our students have learned the importance of teamwork and cooperation, and we certainly hope that they will continue to excel in future competitions!

The school will be having its annual staff retreat over the eLearning Week on 22 and 23 March 2012. As such, the school’s General Office will not be open on both days, and will resume operations on 26 March 2012, Monday.

Award Winners for No. 1 & 2

It was a tough fight as the mission for the IDE Robotics 2012 was only announced on the morning of the competition day. The students had to overcome the challenge of having only four hours to prepare, build, and program their robots for the competition. Their mission consisted of several scoring elements and tasks that were wrapped around a central theme.

Using the LEGO® NXT robotics platform together with their imagination and creativity, our students performed incredibly well in being able to devise the most feasible strategies within a short time frame.
